Points to note before selecting laptop under 40000

Your budget plays a crucial role as we list the points keeping it in mind.

Display

Laptops are available with different display resolutions. You have the Full HD (1920 x 1080p) and the HD Ready (1366 x 768p). It is advisable to go for the 1080p resolution. You can also look at screen features like IPS and anti-glare.

At the same time, you should note that 4K and touchscreen laptops are out of reach of this Rs 40K budget.

The screen size is purely a personal choice. Usually, laptops are available in sizes 14-inches and 15.6-inches. You have the MacBooks with smaller screens, whereas the gaming laptops can have larger screen sizes.

The 14-inches laptops are the best from the portability angle as they are compact and fit into your backpack comfortably. Gaming enthusiasts would love to have a 15.6-inches laptop as it offers them a larger screen to play with.

Storage Space

Generally, laptops in this budget range offer two types of storage, HDD and SSD (Solid State Drive). When choosing your storage, it is better to opt for SSD because they are faster and reliable than HDDs.

Compared to HDDs, the SSD does not have any movable parts. Besides, they offer ten times faster read speeds and 20 times faster write speeds. Laptops with SSD storage boot faster and display less lag when opening apps or performing multiple tasks.

The drawback of SSDs is that they are expensive than HDDs. However, a laptop in this budget range can include a 256GB SSD comfortably. If you need to store large volumes of data, the 1TB HDD is a better option. Otherwise, it is always better to go for SSD storage. Besides making the laptops light, the SSDs use less power, thereby resulting in extended battery life.

Some of the latest laptops offer hybrid storage, whereby you can opt for a 256GB SSD plus 1TB HDD combo.

You should also note that the NVMe SSD is faster than the SATA SSD. The SATA SSD has a write speed limit of 600MBps, whereas the NVMe SSD can write at a speed of 2000MBps.

Memory

A laptop should have a minimum memory of at least 8GB DDR4 RAM for better multitasking. It can be challenging to get a higher RAM in this budget. However, you can go for upgradeable RAM to add RAM in the future if necessary.

Processor

You do not have to look beyond the Intel and AMD Ryzen CPUs. We have good options available, like Intel Core i3-1115G4, Intel Core i5-1035G1, Intel Core i3-1005G1, AMD Ryzen 3 4300U, and the AMD Ryzen 3 3250.

This budget does not allow you to go for the i7 or higher. The 11th generation i3-1115G4 and the AMD Ryzen 3 4300U are the best among the CPUs discussed here. You can find more details about these CPUs in our FAQ section.

Graphics

You cannot expect your CPU in this budget range to support dedicated graphics. However, all the laptops available in our budget come equipped with integrated graphics. It is not possible to have FHD 60fps gaming with Intel Integrated or AMD Radeon Vega 6 graphics.

You can run games at 1080p at low and medium settings. As far as gaming laptops in this budget are concerned, the Intel Core i3-1115G4 is the best CPU combination available.

Connectivity Ports

You cannot expect Thunderbolt connectivity options in this budget range. The best you can have are the USB 3.0 ports, USB Type C, and HDMI ports. Usually, all laptops feature a Card Reader. DVD drives and RJ45 ports are out of fashion today. You have better wireless connectivity options available.

Keyboard

Backlit keyboards are not available in our budget.

Best Laptops Under 40000

Though you cannot expect laptops in this category to offer a high-quality gaming experience, they are adequate for your general computing assignments.

This HP 15 (2021) 15s-dy3001TU model comes equipped with an 11th generation Ci3 1115G4 CPU.

As you cannot expect a laptop in this budget range to feature a discrete graphics card, you must be satisfied with the Intel UHD graphics. The Intel UHD graphics should prove sufficient for your daily computing assignments. You can find it challenging to play fast and action-packed games like GTA V or PUBG.

Your 40K budget does not permit you to go beyond 8GB RAM. However, the best aspect of this laptop configuration is that it has an expandable slot enabling you to go for RAM up to 16GB in the future.

This laptop model features 1TB HDD storage. Though HDD is a less expensive option than SSD, it is better to replace the HDD storage with at least 256GB SSD.

The HP 15 (2021) model with the AMD Ryzen CPU features an SSHD option with a hybrid storage capacity of 1TB HDD and 256GB SSD. Besides reducing the laptop’s weight, SSD storage enhances processing speed considerably.

The 15.6-inches FHD screen 91080p) with IPS and anti-glare features is a good one to have. There is a 14-inches HP model available (14s-dy2500TU) on the market with a similar CPU configuration. The 14-inches model features 256GB SSD instead of the 1TB HDD storage.

This Laptop features a USB C port and two standard USB 3.0 ports. Besides, the HDMI port helps connect to external gaming consoles, soundbars, and other devices.

Positives

  • The 1TB HDD storage allows you to store more documents, songs, photos, and videos. It also lets you install more applications. However, SSD storage can be a better option despite being expensive. As this laptop features a 2.5-inch SATA, you can connect the Samsung SSD 870 QVO. Alternatively, you can install an M.2 slot to connect better SSD storage like the Samsung 970 Evo.
  • Though 8GB RAM should suffice for your regular computing assignments, this laptop features expandable RAM up to 16GB.
  • The anti-glare IPS screen enhances the viewing experience and reduces eye strain. FHD resolution makes the images and text look sharp and clear.
  • This Laptop does not support Thunderbolt 3 or 4, but it has a USB C port to enable quick data transfer. Besides, it has other options like two USB 3.0 ports and one HDMI port.

Negatives

  • The Ci3 processor has two cores, and hence, it affects the overall performance. The laptop with the AMD Ryzen CPU also comes with two cores.
  • The HDD storage reduces battery life considerably. Besides, it affects the booting performance as compared to SSD storage.

Though you have a 14-inches variant at a lower price, this HP 15 Model with the Intel Core i3 1154G4 is one of the best options available in this Rs 40K budget range. It is an ideal device for students and office use.

2. HP 15s-ey1003AU Ryzen 3 4300U 15.6-inch FHD Laptop

This HP 15s-ey1003AU features a powerful processor in the AMD Ryzen 3 4300U. This quad-core is a better processor than the dual-core Ci3 1154G4, thereby making the 15s-ey1003AU a good option in this Rs 40K budget range.

  • Processor – AMD Ryzen 3 4300U with a maximum boost clock speed of 3.7GHz
  • Display – 15.6-inches SVA display (1080p) with anti-glare
  • Graphics – AMD Radeon graphics
  • Memory – 8GB DDR4 2666 MHz SDRAM expandable to 16GB
  • Storage – 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
  • Connectivity Ports – 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB C, 1 x HDMI, 1 x RJ45, 1 x Audio Jack, 1 x SD Card
  • Battery Life – approximately five hours
  • Operating System – Windows 10 Home with lifetime validity plus MS Office Home and Student 2019 (Trial Version)

This HP 15s-ey1003AU model’s strength is in its quad-core AMD Ryzen 3 4300U processor. The higher number of cores enhances processing speed. Hence, this laptop seems to be a better option than the HP 15s-dy3001TU model with a dual-core CPU.

The AMD Radeon Vega graphics is a better option than the Intel UHD graphics. Though these graphics do not allow you to play games at their highest settings, you can still play most of the games at low settings.

This laptop features 8GB RAM, expandable up to 16GB to enhance processing power. Compared to other laptops in this pricing range, the 16GB expandable option is an excellent one.

While HDD storage is the norm in laptops in this budget range, the 15s-ey1003AU features 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD storage. Besides being 30% faster than HDD. As a result, it displays better performance and boots up more quickly. The HP 15 (2021) counterpart with AMD Ryzen CPU offers SSHD storage with an additional 1TB HDD to go along with 256GB SSD.

The 15.6-inches anti-glare screen does not have IPS, but the SVA panel allows for a pleasant viewing experience because it reduces eye strain.

The HP 15s-ey1003AU offers good connectivity options in one USB C port, two USB 3.0 ports, and an HDMI port. Besides, it supports Wi-Fi 5.0 and Bluetooth.

Positives

  • The pricing is one of the positives of this laptop. The HP 15s-ey1003AU is available well below Rs 40K.
  • A quad-core processor is any day better than a dual-core CPU because of its better processing capabilities. The AMD Ryzen 3 4300U can perform more tasks without slowing down the user interface.
  • The AMD Radeon Vega 5 graphics is a powerful one as it enables you to play some of the best games like GTA V, Need For Speed, etc., at low settings and 1080p with a 30fps.
  • The SVA panel allows for sharp and clear images on the screen. The anti-glare feature reduces eye strain.

Negatives

  • Two USB 3.0 ports could prove inadequate as you cannot connect more external USB devices to your laptop at a time.

Though this laptop, the 15s-ey1003AU has a smaller memory than its competitors like the 15s-dy3001TU or the 14s-fr0016AU, it is one of the best laptops under Rs 40,000 with SSD storage.

3. Lenovo Ideapad S145 – 81W800FLIN  Intel Core i5 10th Gen Laptop

The Lenovo Ideapad S145 81W800FLIN is a decent laptop to have in this budget range. It is available in different configurations, with this model featuring the 10th gen Intel Core i5 CPU. The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U version, 81UT0044IN, is also available at the same price.

  • Processor – Quad-core 10th gen Intel Core i5 1035G1 with a maximum clock speed of 3.6GHz

Lenovo Ideapad S145 Intel Core i5 10th Gen 81W800FLIN

The quad-core 10th gen Intel Ci5 processor is one of the highlights of this budget laptop. Four cores and 6MB Smart Cache enables faster processing as compared to the HP 15s-dy3001TU model with dual-core Intel Ci3 1154G4CPU. The AMD Ryzen counterpart features a 4MB cache.

The form factor with the 180-degree hinge and plastic body makes it an attractive proposition. As it weighs around 1.85Kg, this laptop is comfortably portable.

At prices in the budget range of Rs 40K, you cannot get discrete graphics. Hence, you have to remain satisfied with the Intel UHD 620 graphics. However, it does not allow action-packed gaming at high settings. It is a good laptop for home use or students.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM storage is sufficient for your general use.

The 1TB HDD storage is good, but HDD can slow down the processing speed considerably. The AMD Ryzen model with its 512GB SSD storage offers a good alternative. However, the SATA SSD is not as fast as the M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. You can consider switching over to the M.2 slot, but it can push up the pricing considerably.

The company websites advertise the battery life as around 5.5 hours. However, much depends on how you use the machine. The HDD reduces battery life considerably. Opting for SSD storage enhances battery life and improves processing speed.

Positives

  • The 15.6-inches FHD screen with anti-glare technology is a clear positive. It enables you to view sharp pictures. Thus, the Lenovo S145 qualifies as a good laptop for watching multimedia content. This laptop offers decent acoustic performance, as well.
  • This Lenovo model supports Wi-Fi 5.0 and Bluetooth v4.2. Besides, it offers a range of connectivity ports, including HDMI, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0 ports. Thunderbolt 3 is not available in either variant.
  • The quad-core Ci5 processor is a good one in this budget. Though the AMD Ryzen counterpart should cost less, it is available at the same price, primarily because it offers a better storage capacity of 512GB SSD.
  • 1TB HDD storage in the Intel Core i5 model offers sufficient room for storing your photos, videos, documents, and other data. As HDD slows down the system considerably, you can consider alternatives, like SSD storage.
  • The plastic body appears fragile but is durable. The 180-degree hinge is an added attraction.

Negatives

  • The Intel Ci5-powered Lenovo S145 model does not come with any preloaded software options. On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen counterpart offers a trial version of MS Office 2019.

The Lenovo Ideapad S145 is one of the best laptops in the Rs 40K range with a Ci5 CPU. The AMD Ryzen CPU-powered model is an excellent alternative to have.

4. Mi Notebook 14 – XMA1901-FL Intel Core i5-10210U 10th Gen Laptop

You can always expect Chinese laptops to be available at low prices. The Mi Notebook 14 is a perfect example as it features a 10th gen Intel Ci5 processor and SATA SSD storage to fit in your budget range of Rs 40K.

  • Display – 14-inches FHD (1080p) with anti-glare screen
  • Graphics – Intel UHD 620 graphics

  • Battery Life – approximately ten hours
  • Operating System – Windows 10 Home with lifetime validity plus Office 365 (One-month Trial Version)

This entry-level laptop from Xiaomi competes well with the Lenovo Ideapad S145, 81W800FLIN on the pricing aspect. However, the Ideapad S145 has a 15.6-inches screen compared to the 14-inches FHD of the Mi Notebook 14. Compared to the Lenovo model, the Mi Notebook 14 features a metal body with anodized sandblasted exteriors.

The 140-degree hinge offers less convenience than the Lenovo Ideapad S145 that can extend up to 180 degrees. However, this laptop is slimmer as under 18mm and lighter at 1.5Kg. Thus, it is amongst the best laptops in this budget range in the portability aspect.

The Mi Notebook 14 comes in three variants, with all of them featuring the 10th gen Intel Core i5 10210U processor. The maximum clock speed of 4.2GHz and the non-upgradeable 8GB RAM are other standard features.

The base variant features a 256GB SATA SSD, whereas the middle variant doubles the memory to 512GB SSD. The top-end variant has 512GB SSD and comes with a discrete graphics card in the NVidia GeForce MX250. The present model features integrated UHD 620 graphics.

The Mi Notebook offers three USB ports and one HDMI, thereby displaying limited connectivity. One expects the model to include a Type C USB port at this pricing. The Mi 14 supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth v5.0.

Positives

  • The anti-reflective finish on the FHD screen is an advantage as it causes less eye strain.
  • This Mi Notebook promises up to ten hours of battery life. However, we found out that the laptop functions continuously for up to eight hours when streaming movies. Anyway, it is a good feature. The quick charging feature is heartening as it charges from 0 to 55% within 30 minutes, with the laptop switched off.
  • The slim and lightweight body makes the Mi Notebook 14 one of the most comfortable to carry around.

Negatives

  • Though it features SSD storage, it has a SATA interface that limits its speed. Besides, there is no option to upgrade to higher storage or include an M.2 slot. Hence, it should be worth spending a few thousand bucks more and go for the middle version with 512GB SSD.
  • This model does not feature a USB Type C port, thereby limiting its data transfer capabilities. It does not have an SD card reader facility.

The Mi Notebook 14 is a good laptop in this budget range, especially for students and office use. Homemakers also love this compact device.

5. HP 14 – 14s-cf3074TU Ultra Thin & Light Laptop

Generally, AMD Ryzen CPUs are less expensive than the Intel Core processors. It helps reduce the overall laptop cost considerably. A 15-inch HP laptop, 15s-gr0011AU with AMD Ryzen 3 3250 CPU is available at competitive pricing in the Rs 35K range. However, this model, the HP 14, offers better performance because of better processing capacity and SSD storage.

  • Processor – Dual-core 10th gen Intel Core i5 1005G1 with a maximum Intel Boost speed of 3.4GHz
  • Display – 14-inches HD Ready (1366 x 768p)

  • Battery Life – approximately seven hours with an average standby life of 12 hours
  • Operating System – Windows 10 Home with lifetime validity plus Microsoft Office 2019 (One-month Trial Version)
HP 14 Ultra Thin & Light 14 (35.56cms) Laptop (10th Gen i3-1005G1

The best aspect of this HP 14-inches model is that it is an ideal laptop for everyday use. It is a slim and lightweight device that you can carry anywhere comfortably.

The 10th gen Ci3 CPU is not the best in the business but can deliver decent performance at an affordable price. While a competitive model with an 11th gen CPU is available, it costs more than the 14s-cf3074TU.

Generally, laptops in this pricing range feature 4GB RAM. The 14s-cf3074TU comes better equipped with an 8GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM. You can expand the RAM to 16GB if required. However, it will increase the pricing accordingly.

This model features SSD storage instead of HDD, thereby helping to enhance processing speed. It also enables quicker booting as SSD can deliver 30% faster performance than HDD. The best part of it all is that the SSD connects through a PCIe NVMe M.2 slot instead of SATA 3.

The HP 14s-cf3074TU is not the ideal gaming laptop. The Intel UHD 620 graphics are suitable for your regular computing work but not for playing games at high settings. It is the perfect laptop for students as they can comfortably tuck it into their backpacks and carry it to their universities.

This device offers good connectivity options in three USB ports (including USB C) and an HDMI 1.4 port. Besides, it supports Bluetooth v4 and Wi-Fi. The multi-card reader and an audio jack make this laptop a good one to enjoy multimedia content.

Positives

  • The most significant advantage of this HP model is its NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD storage. Though it offers 256GB storage only, the SSD helps to enhance processing speeds. The M.2 slot has fewer limitations as compared to the SATA 3 slot. It allows this laptop to process and transfer data at faster speeds.
  • The HP 14-inches laptop offers 8GB RAM, more than what other devices in its pricing range do. Besides, you can upgrade RAM up to 16GB to enhance its multitasking abilities.
  • The presence of a USB C port is an advantage as it speeds up data transfer considerably. This port can transfer data up to ten times faster than the standard USB Type-A ports.

Negatives

  • The dual-core processing capacity slows down the CPU. However, it should suffice for your daily computing needs.

You should expect some drawbacks if you have a low budget. This HP 14-inches model is one of the best available on the market in the price range of Rs 35K. You can try out other options like going for the AMD Ryzen CPU-powered laptop to save costs.

6. HP 15 Ryzen 3-3250 Laptop

The attractive pricing in the Rs 35K bracket makes this HP 15-inches laptop an appealing one. One of the prime contributors to this attractive pricing is the AMD Ryzen 3 3250U processor. Its competitor, the HP 15s-du3053TU with Intel Core i3, is available in the Rs 40K range.

  • Processor – Dual-core AMD Ryzen 3 3250U with a boost clock speed capacity of 3.5GHz
  • Display – 15.6-inches FHD (1080p) with IPS and anti-glare screen
  • Graphics – AMD Radeon Vega 6 graphics
  • Memory – 8GB DDR4 2400MHz SDRAM, expandable to 16GB
  • Storage – 1TB HDD 5400rpm
  • Connectivity Ports – 2 x USB (standard), 1 x USB 3.1, 1 x HDMI, 1 x Audio Jack/microphone, 1 x RJ45
  • Battery Life – approximately twelve hours
  • Operating System – Windows 10 Home with lifetime validity plus MS Office 2019 Home and Student (One-month Trial Version)

This HP 15-inches laptop features 8GB DDR4 memory upgradeable to 16GB for better multitasking.

The high storage capacity of 1TB HDD is an attractive proposition. Though it would be better to have SSD storage, it can increase the pricing considerably.

AMD Radeon Vega 6 graphics deliver better graphics performance than the Intel UHD 620 graphics. While the Intel UHD 620 UHD graphics are suitable for your everyday computing activities, the AMD Radeon Vega 6 allows you to play the latest games at low settings conveniently.

The manufacturers advertise the laptop battery life at 12 hours. However, a lot depends on your usage patterns. If you watch movies continuously by streaming online, your laptop cannot last more than eight to ten hours on a full charge. Playing games can also drain your battery faster. The fast-charging feature is heartening.

The USB C port is an added attraction and features two USB Type-A ports to enable quick data transfer. Besides, this laptop supports Bluetooth v4 and Wi-Fi.

Positives

  • This laptop has a high storage capacity of 1TB HDD. Thus, it becomes easier for you to store your content easily.
  • This HP 15-inches model offers more RAM than the average laptop does in this pricing range. Hence, it enhances multitasking abilities and improves your convenience levels.
  • The AMD Radeon Vega 6 graphics allows you to play games like Need for Speed, Counter Strike, fortnite, Assassin’s Creed, and others at low settings without lag.

Negatives

  • This model does not have SSD storage, whereas its nearest competitors do. SSD is up to 30% faster than HDD. Thus, you can expect better performances and faster booting. The HP 15s-gr0011AU is at a disadvantage in this regard.
  • This laptop features a dual-core CPU. The fewer the cores, the slower is the overall performance. The HP 15 (2021) with the Intel Core i5 CPU has four cores and performs better.

A laptop for general use does not require high-level configurations. This HP 15s-gr0011AU should be an ideal one because of its affordability.

    • Hi Avinash

For Programming purpose, you need a Good CPU and Fast NVMe Storage, you don’t need 1 TB HDD or Dedicated Graphics. Checkout the below models.

HP 14s-dy2500TU – 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1115G4,8 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM and 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and a Full HD Screen. The NVMe SSD is a lot faster than HDD. You don’t need 1 TB Storage space unless you play games or you store large amounts of media. I always suggest anyone to buy a laptop that comes with NVMe M.2 SSD.

If you want a 15.6 inch Screen, you can have a look at Acer Aspire 5 A515-56. Processor and Storage is the same as above one but this model only comes wit 4GB Ram. You have the option to expand it up to 12GB. This one is also good for programming.

The above two models are priced around 40K. If you are looking for a more budget oriented model, HP 250 G8 Laptop 3Y665PA is the right choice. This model comes with 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1115G4, 256 GB SSD, 15.6 inch screen and DOS os. you have to install windows 10 on your own.

    • Laptops with a dedicated Graphics cards are priced above 50K. If you want a fast Laptop, the ideal configuration is 10th Gen i5 + SSD and 8GB Ram. Such models are priced above 40K. The best budget model is Mi Notebook 14

This one is available with Graphics card and without Graphics card.

    • Hi Sanchit

For CA and other accounting work, sometimes you need to run multiple chrom tabs. Along with a Good Processor and GPU, you also need an SSD for faster everything.

Do not go for any Laptop that comes only with a HDD. A combination of SSD HDD or Only SSD is good.

A laptop with i5 Processor, SSD and Nvidia Card is not available in your budget range.

Please have a look at the below models

ASUS VivoBook 14 X409FJ-EK501T – 3K more than your budget

ASUS VivoBook 14 X409FA-EK502T – NO Graphics Card

HP 15q-ds1000TU Laptop – NO Graphics Card

Dell 10th Gen Ci5-1035G1 – NO Graphics Card

If Gaming is your main theme, then you opt for a Gaming laptop or a laptop with dedicated GPU. If Work is your main usage, then opt for a laptop with SSD.
