Television Buying Guide

This will give you an insight into the various terminologies used by the TV manufacturers today. After all, these televisions are going to be expensive. When you are investing a good amount on them, it is better to have a clear idea about their working. This post will help you a great deal in this matter

CRT Televisions

The CRT TVs are the most common ones available in the market. They were the only types of TV screens available till as recently as the first decade of the present century. One must say that they can still provide the best overall picture quality for two very simple reasons.

One is that they do not have a fixed native resolution. This enables them to display sources with different resolutions at the optimum image quality. The second aspect is that the viewing cone is always at 180 degrees in both vertical as well as horizontal directions.

LCD Televisions

These televisions have a flat screen LCD panel capable of blocking and passing light. These televisions use active matrix LCD display technology. The LCD crystals do not produce light but simply allow them to pass.

Hence, you see these televisions having a CFL bulb on the back panel.

LED Televisions

Many people do not know the fact that the LED televisions are a simple upgraded model of the LCD TV. Instead of the CFL bulbs, these TVs have LEDs to illuminate the screen.

This enables the TV to be thinner than the normal LCD TVs. There are two types of LED TVs in the market. The Direct Back lit has the LED lighting arrangement at the back thereby allowing for highlighting specific areas. The Edge-lit LEDs have these lights arranged at the edges around the TV. This allows the TV makers to make the TV thinner.

Plasma Screens

The Plasma screens are superior to the LCD and LED TVs. The Plasma technology involves the injection of gases and sealing them in plasma form between two sheets of glass. On connecting with electricity, these gases react and illuminate the screen.

This technology involves a unique manufacturing process whereby the Plasma TVs are not available in sizes smaller than 40 inches.

Curved Screens

The curved screens have become a sort of a fashion today. You find them in TV screens of 43 inches and above. They claim to offer an IMAX like effect but you have to sit straight to experience a semblance of it. They appear warped when light reflects on them.

The Technology Front

We have just seen the tip of the iceberg as far as choosing the right TV is concerned. We shall discuss some other factors. We shall now look at the different technologies available in the market. You have technological terms like OLEDs, QLEDs, WebOS, Android OS, HD, and Ultra HD to contend with.

The internet TV is changing the entire scenario today. People have a choice of what, where, and how they want to view TV. The TVs have become really smart today. One should change the name of the humble TV from ‘the idiot box’ to ‘the smart idiot box’.

4K – Next Generation TV Technology

There has been a tremendous shift from the analogue signals to the digital signals. Similarly, the resolutions have also evolved from the Standard Definition to the High Definition.

Today you have all the TV brands delivering HD content. The picture resolution available in the HD TVs is of the order of “1280 X 720.” You find this configuration (720p) in most of the budget HD TVs today.

The mid-range TV has a higher resolution in the form of 1920 X 1080. You commonly know this configuration as 1080p.

There is a shift in the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 thereby paving the way for a better viewing experience.

The next range of TVs is the 4K or the Ultra HD TV. The UHD has a resolution of 3840 X 2160 whereas the 4K TV has 4096 X 2160. Many people use these terms interchangeably but technically they are not correct.

We trust we are not confusing you too much.

The idiot box has the capacity to confuse people during normal times as well. You have a new terminology in the form of Ultra HD Premium. There is nothing special in this terminology except for the fact that it is certified by UHD Alliance Group.

More than 35 companies such as Disney, Netflix, and Amazon are part of it. Some of the TV manufacturing companies like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic have Ultra HD certified TVs.

You need TVs of bigger sizes to experience the full impact of 4K. It is advisable to have TV screens of 49 inches and more though 4K technology is also available in TV screen sizes of 43 inches as well.

The size of the television

One might think that having a bigger screen equals to have better view. But there are certain things to be kept in mind when deciding the size of the screen, some of the basic points being the size of the room, the distance between the viewer and the smart TV, the number of viewers watching the TV simultaneously.

Other than these little factors, the resolution of the TV is also to be considered. High resolution can let the viewer sit at a closer proximity without pixelation being spotted and therefore, a smaller screen can be opted for while a lower resolution will require the TV to be set at a farther distance requiring a larger screen.

Here is a standardized chart that may assist you to pick your choice of size

Distance Ideal screen size
5-6 feet32 inches
6-9 feet40-45 inches
9-10 feet 50 inches
10-12 feet 60-65 inches

OLED and QLED TV Technology

You have heard of smartphones having OLED screens. How can the smart idiot box remain behind? LG is the principal supplier of OLED technology.

What does OLED stand for?

OLED TV or the Organic Light Emitting Diode panel TVs use organic material instead of the traditional LEDs to light up as electric current passes through them. These OLEDs light up the individual pixels instead of the entire screen as you find in the normal LED TVs.

You get absolute contrast as this technology allows you to reproduce the true black colour. In addition, the OLEDs light up 1000 times faster than the normal LEDs. This allows for greater clarity of the images.

You get the LG OLED TVs in India whereas Panasonic is yet to release the Vierra TVs in this country.

There is an electronic war out there in the market.

When you have LG coming up with a revolutionary concept such as OLED, Samsung has come up with their own version known as QLED or Quantum-dot LEDs.

These microscopic semiconductors can emit beautiful coloured light when hit by an incident ray of light. The light absorbing and emitting capacity of the QLEDs make them perfect for having vibrant pictures. They are highly energy efficient as well.

The QLEDs have a capacity of attaining astonishing brightness levels of 1500 to 2000 nits. You have the latest Samsung Q series TVs coming with this QLED technology. They are also giving out a Samsung Galaxy S8+ free along with these televisions. Now, one must say that idiot box really knows which nerve to touch. Check out CNET QLED vs OLED Guide.

HDR Technology

In his quest for excellence, Man is inventing newer technology. One such technology doing the rounds in this industry is the HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology.

This is a great combination of two of the most important aspects of TV lighting technology, contrast ratio and colour accuracy. We know that white light is made up of seven colours. However, there are different shades of these colours as they undergo the transition. You can find innumerable shades of blue and green between the basic colours blue and green.

This HDR technology is able to highlight these subtle changes beautifully so that you get a heavenly experience. You will be able to watch the perfect blacks and the perfect whites using this technology. When you combine this HDR technology with 4K resolution, you get a mind-blowing experience.

It is available in a number of formats. This fact can confuse the buyer no end. Hence, we can say that the idiot box does love to confuse people even today as well.

HDR10+

One of the most easily available formats is the HDR10. This is an open source format very similar to the Android OS. There is no need of paying any licensing fee to acquire the HDR10 format.

Hence, the TV manufacturers prefer to use this format. Tweaking the HDR10 to make it compatible with the UHD and 4K resolution is easy. The HDR Blu Ray Discs are available in the HDR10 format.

You have heard of Dolby Sound. Have you heard of Dolby Vision? This is another common HDR10 format available in the market. Some select premiere brands such as Vizio, Philips, and LG offer this format.

The Dolby Vision can support up to 10,000 nits of peak brightness as compared to the 4000 nits available in HDR10. The Dolby Vision can support up to 12-bit colour depth. In comparison the HDR10 supports 10-bit colour depth

There are other versions of HDR such as Hybrid Log Gamma and Technicolour HDR etc. BBC and NHK have developed the Hybrid Log Gamma and use it for satellite broadcast purposes. Europe is the only continent that uses Technicolour HDR.

The Picture Engine Concept

This is a competitive market out there. No TV manufacturing company can afford to drop its guard even for a second. It does not take long for the others to leapfrog over the competition. You have the latest TV Viewing technologies available. However, the quest for excellence is a never ending one. This brings us to the concept of the picture engines.

The picture engines are capable of increasing the pixel count thereby ensuring clearer and crisper pictures. We shall look at the picture engines released by some of the major TV manufacturers.

X Reality Pro Engine

This Sony product is capable of intelligently scaling up each pixel, thereby ensuring unmatched clarity. In order to achieve this objective, it adds important details to the picture like missing colours, vibrancy, lustre, and texture.

Triple XD Engine

LG has introduced the Triple XD Engine that works on three important parameters such as contrast, colour, and noise. In order to enhance picture quality, it increases the brightness, black levels and alters the colour tones. At the same time it provides analogue and MPEG noise reduction algorithms.

3D Hyper Real Engine

You cannot discount Samsung out of the picture. Samsung has come up with its own version of a picture engine in 3D Hyper Real Engine. This Company is committed to providing high quality picture with amazing depths and enthralling colours. This picture engine governs the colour, contrast, and motion to the highest levels of their efficiency.

4K Fine Remaster Engine

The problem in India is that you have 4K resolution but do not have the sources that provide native 4K content to watch. Hence, you need to upscale them every time. This can result in grainy output and look blurred. In order to overcome this problem, Panasonic has come up with the 4K fine Remaster Engine.

Connectivity

All the smart TVs need to be connected to the internet to be able to use it complete potential. Many smart TVs have Ethernet on the rear end to connect it to the internet router while some have built-in connectivity.

Every smart TV needs to have the basic connectivity available for it to function with other devices that are standard and universal to almost all the gadgets.

Some of the basic connectivity options for input developed are:

USB PORT– here pen drives, internet dongles, hard discs etc can be connected.

BLUETOOTH– other devices can be connected to smart TV without using a wire within a distance of 50 meters.

Wi-Fi– there is no point of getting smart TV if it’s not to be connected to the internet. Built-in Wifi on the TV allows wireless connection to use the internet.

And for output connectivity, the following can be used:

3.5mm AUDIO JACK– this is used to connect the headphones, speakers and soundbars.

RCA AUDIO OUTPUT– here a cable is used to connect the home theatre and soundbars to the TV.

ADMI ARC– this also links up the home theatre with the TV.

Sound system

The buyers take a lot of care when picking the right display with the best resolution and overall picture quality when purchasing a TV but often they miss out on checking the sound system of the set.

The TVs have become much slimmer and compact than the older versions leaving very little space for the speakers. It won’t be wrong to say that the slim smart TV sets do not have a satisfactory sound quality hence it often requires a sound system to boost the sound quality.

Some of the most famous brands synonymous with the sound system are:

  • Dolby digital
  • Digital theatre system

Dolby Digital can be said to be the front runner in this field as it has theatre-like sound effects brought to you at your home and it also caters to the professional sound system needs. Dolby digital’s sound system meant for TVs are:

Dolby Atmos

This is said to be the future of the best surround sound. In this case, atmos are placed around the room to create an all-enveloping “3D” sound experience by giving a front left, front right centre, surround left and surround right.

Previously, sounds were channelized meaning – some portion of the audio would get routed to a particular speaker and the other in other direction, giving lopsided effect. But with Dolby Atmos, this problem is of the specific channel has been corrected.

Here the sound system identifies the source of the sound and the movement of it, understands the same and plays it in a 3-D space. This kind of management of the sound makes the user feel as if he is amidst the subject in vision and within the four walls.

Digital Theatre System

(DTS) is one of the most popular names in the world of surround sound systems. In the past, DTS was mostly used professionally in the theatres but in recent times it is being used in television sets and home theatres.

DTS has exponentially improved the quality of the soundtrack as it has a way that works as a filter which assists the Field Application Engineers to tune TVs and soundbars.

DTS uses the principals of psychoacoustic to provide the best audio experience to its audience.

One can also opt for any other Home Theater System or a Soundbar that gaining popularity these days bar as it takes very little space and gives good quality sound.

Smart TV – Operating System

Android used by Sony smart TV

The one thing that sets an Android TV apart from the rest of the smart TVs is homogeneity in terms of its operations. The user has multiple options with respect to the content that are displayed as per his preferences.

The Home page on the screen shows a bunch of videos from YouTube and Google videos that perhaps pop as per your historical views and likes. There’s also a row of content selected specifically by Sony, which is then followed by apps like Netflix, Amazon Video, links to the Google Play Store, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies and TV, YouTube.

The coolest feature offered by Android TV is that the user can operate the TV using any other android device he owns like a phone or tab.[/su_note]

You can also find Amazon with UHD HDR and YouTube in 4K UHD. Other options comprise of Now TV, Sky Store, plus all the main channel catch-up services.

These streaming pps remain open and live even when you switch to doing something else. Thereby making navigation simpler and you can simply pick the choice of your view right from where you left it.

Pros

  • Google assistant and Alexa enabled for oral control
  • Swift and convenient navigation
  • Great response and speed

Cons

  • Only selective apps can be found

Smart hub and Tizen operating system by Samsung

The biggest advantage that Samsung provides with its new launch is that the users get a lot of shortcuts, apps and icons to access content and the cherry on the cake is that it also has a ‘Recent box’ that lists down all the freshly opened apps and channels. It offers access to BBC iPlayer, ITVhub, All4, Demand 5, Netflix, Amazon Video and YouTube.

Tizen Smart hub gives the option to split the screen for multi-tasking. The OS cuts down on clutter to dispel confusion, but this sometimes proves to be a downside as the user has to go through the screen one by one to get the desired app.

But that’s when Smart hub comes to the rescue that divides the content from apps and from your own USB sticks/home network, making it easier to locate the needed app.

Pros

  • Easy to navigate
  • Convenient layout
  • Unpaid channels to keep your pocket heavy

Cons

  • Limited app options
  • Needs improvement in Universal search

  • Good response
  • User friendly

Cons

  • May turn out to be a little plain for some users

Motion Rate Concept

Whenever you talk of TV specifications, picture, sound, colour, and many other aspects come into the discussion. However, motion rate, one of the most important aspects, takes a back seat.

This reluctance on the people to discuss and be aware of the concept has allowed TV manufacturers to fudge their figures. They use their individual interpretation to influence unsuspecting buyers.

What is the concept?

In very simple terms the refresh rate is the number of frames that a television can display per second. The unit of measurement is Hertz. Hence, if we say that the refresh rate of a TV is 50 Hz, it entails that the TV can display 50 images in one second. In India, the AC current runs at 60 Hz. Hence, this is the maximum rate of the source that the TV can run.

This concept is there since the days of the CRT televisions. There has been no change in this frequency and therefore the present day smart TVs run at a maximum rate of 60 Hz. rtings guide to motion rates.

However, you do find some manufacturers marketing their TVs stating that their refreshing rate is say 120 Hz or even 240 Hz. This is not the case in actuality. The TV manufacturers use different terminologies to highlight this fact. Let us look at some of them in brief.

Clear Motion Rate (CMR): Specially coined by Samsung, CMR comprises of three main factors, panel refresh rate, image processor speed, and backlight technology.

TruMotion: LG has come up with this term stating that it reduces the blurs enabling you to view sporting events in a clearer and crisper manner.

Image Motion Rate: Panasonic is the manufacturer using this concept to report higher refresh rate figures

MotionFlow XR: Sony leads the pack in this world of exaggeration by stating that this rate is 4 times the actual refresh rate.

Inference: One should not underestimate the idiot box anymore. It can prove you wrong quite easily just as it does so while advertising the refresh rate concept. However, you cannot do much about this gray area. You can at best term them as sales gimmicks.

However, that does not mean that the TVs they offer are not of the highest quality. If you have any queries regarding the best led tv selection, feel free to put in your question in the comments section and we will try to answer them.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many hours can an LED TV last?

It depends on how you use your LED TV. Technically, an LED TV can last for anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 hours. Thus, if you view your TV for 24 hours in a day, it should last somewhere between six to ten years. However, many other factors define the longevity of an LED TV.

2. What is the difference between the LCD and LED TV?

The difference is only in the backlighting source. Both these TVs comprise LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels. The LCD TVs have CFL bulbs to illuminate the screen.

The LED TVs incorporate light-emitting diodes for illumination. Each LED emits the three primary colours, Red, Blue, and Green. They fuse to create an exciting range of colour combinations.

3. How do I distinguish between an LCD and LED TV?

The CFL bulbs are placed behind the LCD screen in an LCD TV. On the other hand, the LEDs are usually around the edges or behind the screen. LEDs are comparatively slimmer and smaller when compared to CFL bulbs. Therefore, LED TVs are much thinner than LCD TVs.

4. What is the concept of a smart TV?

The smart TV is one that can access the internet using Wi-Fi. Smart TV can run various in-built apps. The regular TVs cannot do so. However, you can use external appliances like Amazon Fire TV Stick to connect the TV to the home Wi-Fi and convert a standard LCD/LED TV into a smart TV. However, the TV should have an HDMI port to enable the connection.

5. Can smart TV run without an internet connection?

A smart TV needs an internet connection to perform its smart functions. However, it can still work as a regular TV if you connect it to the home cable network. It does not require any internet connectivity for connecting to the DTH network. Under such circumstances, it cannot scan the apps for online content.

6. Is the LED TV a smart TV?

Every LED TV doesn’t need to be a smart TV. However, every smart TV is an LED TV today. You can have LED TVs connecting to the DTH network through cables and working as regular TVs.

  1. Sir
We have seen the TV for 1/ 2 hrs everyday . Now, we think to purchase smart TV aleast 35 to 45″ with essential tools & reasonable value
    Please suggest

  2. I had purchased Sony LED Television; model KD-43X7500E, Sr No3002510 in Nov 2017 from Reliance Digital, R-city Mumbai.

We all know that Sony is a reputed brand name in electronics market. We buy Sony products because Sony is the name of trust and it promises best quality & service.
My family has always trusted Sony for its high quality products and customer satisfaction oriented approach.

Astonishingly in this costly TV of 66k, Soon after the warranty period expired, Horizontal lines appeared.
Sony is International no.1 brand and it has got a problem in just 2 Years, unbelievable!

I have referred websites, so many people having same problem.
Which means theses days even brand like sony is concentrating on amassing money in turn compromising with quality. It is now useless to go for any expensive branded products like SONY.
We are buying Sony Products and paying more amounts, because of Reliability, Good Support, Unbeatable picture quality.
How ever it seems now we are being cheated.

If you are reading this, I would suggest, do not go for any Sony brand. You can Google and find hundreds of similar complains as above.
THINK BEFORE WASTING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY

    • Completely endorse the same, was a Sony fan always from childhood, this is the 4th Sony TV purchased by me in different decades, last one in 2017 was such a disaster. Lost complete faith, repair of horizontal lines are being charged 30k for 3 year old tv. It’s such a disappointment.

  3. Hi, I want to buy 55-inch tv for my house.
Now I am confused about which one to buy among these.

    Samsung: Q60R, Q70R, and Q80R
    Sony: X85G and X95G
    LG: SM8100 and SM9000

Can you please help to find the best one out of these.

  4. sir i am confused between
MI tv 4c pro 32 inch vs VU ultra smart tv 32 inch
mi tv has 4000.1 contrast ratio while
vu tv had 1000000.1 contast ratio
does this make a huge difference in the picture quality
and clearly tell me whose picture quality is better
please tell me as soon as possible

    • VU 1000000:1 is dynamic contrast ratio.

There are two aspects of contrast ratio referred to as native and dynamic.

A Television with a high dynamic contrast ratio won’t look good as a TV with a high native contrast ratio.

A TV with a high native contrast ratio can display dark blacks and bright whites at the same time.

Regarding the picture quality of the above TVs you have mentioned, there won’t be much difference as both these TVs sport an HD ready 1336 x 768p resolution.

If you are looking for an Android TV and you want to enjoy chromecast, Google voice search features, you can go with the Mi TV.

The VU TV comes with inbuilt apps like Netflix, Prime video and youtube.

As I mentioned earlier, there won’t be much difference regarding picture quality. If you are looking for a 32 inch TV with better picture quality, You can have a look at (Sony Bravia 32-inch Full HD LED Smart TV KLV-32W6272G)

If you want to know more about the contrast ration thing, you can read this guide: https://www.cnet.com/news/contrast-ratio-or-how-every-tv-manufacturer-lies-to-you/

  10. Hi Chaitanya, very helpful article.
looking to buy a tv between 50k to 60k, full hd smart tv between 47 to 50 inches. Would prefer amongst the top 4 brands u have mentioned. (how ahead are these 4 brands as compared to others?)
    pls suggest.

2 more qstns that could help us all:
    – should we take extended warranty, is it worth the price and how often does it come in use ?
    – is it recommended to buy online or on retails stores?

    Thanks

    • Most of the electronics and Appliances include a manufacturer’s warranty that typically lasts 12 months. Defects occurring out of faulty Appliance or software are covered under the warranty.

Physical damage such as cracks, scratches, damages caused due to improper usage is not covered by warranty.

Extended warranty also works in a similar way. It only covers malfunctions and breakdowns but not physical or cosmetic damage. It is up to you if you opt for an extended warranty or not.

Technically, there is no much difference whether you buy the product online or at a retail store. You will get same warranty and same brand support. Additionally, you get good discounts, EMI offers, exchange offers when you buy at online stores like Amazon and Flipkart. Make sure you buy the product only from trusted sites like Flipkart, Amazon or Brand Authorized online store.

you have put in one curved model at a huge discount, i don’t know the pros and cons of a curved tv when compared to normal ones, can u pls brief on it or share a link if you have an article on it?

        thanks alot 🙂

        • Here are the Pros and Cons of a Curved Television

Curved TVs enhance immersion by curving the image slightly forward. If you are watching a curved TV for the first time, the images look like 3D even when the original source is 2D. They offer better Contrast. On the top of all these things, the curved TVs just look cool.

          Here are the demerits.

Limited viewing angles. If you really want to enjoy a curved TV, you need to sit right opposite to the middle of the screen. Also, the Screen size needs to be big to get most benefits. The curved TVs look awkward when you hang them on the wall. The Normal Flat Screen LED TVs look great when they are mounted on the wall.

    • Watch in online about specifications etc in online and then go to buying in retail stores is better in my opininon. Retail stores you can view practically and compare models. But dont be in a hurry to buy immediately or dont rely on sales man words completely and dont confuse with their words. Take a correct decision before purchasing go to different stores dont rely on single store. In my opinion purchasing in retail store is better. Please purchase mostly newly launched models. It will be good. The reason is if the product is defect or not working you can change immediately. While in online purchase if found defective you can replace it within 10 days and money refunded but some online shopping they are not replacing or delay in replacing and money is not refunding.

  13. Hi Chaitnya,

I’m looking to buy a 40″inch LED Tv. My chief concern is that I live very close to the Malad Creek, which is known to affect the life of all sorts of electronic devices. This is what I have been told by the engineers who have visited my house to fix my existing 32 inch Samsung. In the last 6 years, I have replaced my PCB once and fixed the speakers once. Is there any brand that corrosion-proofs its hardware parts? We are currently considering LG 43LJ554T and Samsung 43 FHD LED 43M5100

    • LG 49 UJ632T sports an IPS 4K Display Panel and LG’s HDR effect use unique image processing for an HDR like Viewing experience. The 4K Upscaling, Image Processing is also great. The Refresh rate is 50Hz which is good for watching normal TV content and movies. There are three HDMI ports and 2 USB ports.

Samsung Series 6 50 inch MU6100 TV also sports an Ultra HD 4K resolution and the Refresh rate is 100 Hz which is great for watching Action Movies and Adventure Sports. There are 3 HDMI ports and 2 USB ports. Samsung Smart View App is good and you can control the Smart TV with your mobile. You can also watch your mobile’s content on the TV screen. The Picture Quality is Great in both the televisions.

If you are a fan of Action Movie or Adventure Sports, the Samsung TV will be better as the refresh rate is on the higher side.

      • Your article mentions that refresh rates above 60Hz are a gimmick in India and you are recommending a 100Hz Samsung. A bit confused. Can you clarify this please?

    • Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Sony are the Premium Television brands and they compete in terms of technology and these brands have better picture engines. The TV’s with HDR Technology have better contrasts and better colors.

The Picture Quality and Sound depends on the Technology that is employed in the Television. It differs from one model to the other. Please mention the model number so I can advise you accordingly.
