When purchasing a TV for your home, a smart LED TV is any day better than the models that do not offer smart TV features.

Best Smart tv in India led

FYI, a non-smart LED TV can also perform like a smart TV. However, it needs a separate hardware connection like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or an external set-top box from internet service providers like ACT Fibernet, Reliance Jio, Airtel, and many more.

However, such TVs should have an HDMI port to connect to the set-top box. A smart TV does not require any such external hardware.

We shall look at the points to consider when purchasing a smart LED TV, but before that, here is a gist of the top smart LED TVs available in India.

Before we discuss the TV Buying guide in detail, here is a quick checklist to make your job easy.

  • If you are a budget-conscious individual, you can go for the less expensive but equally effective models like Mi, TCL, OnePlus, Kodak, etc. In contrast, if budget is not a constraint, you can always go for the established models like Sony, LG, Samsung, etc.
  • Check out the OS. Generally, Android OS is the most straightforward to use, and it supports the maximum apps, LG’s Web OS and Tizen OS are also popular.
  • As far as possible, go for the latest edition, like the 2020 or 2021 models.
  • The refresh rate should not make much difference, especially when you go for the budget smart LED TVs. A 60Hz refresh rate is the standard offering.
  • HDR-compatible TV sets offer a better quality viewing experience.
  • Look for connectivity ports like HDMI and USB. A minimum of two or even three HDMI ports is recommended because you can connect your Soundbars, Gaming consoles, and other equipment.
  • A Soundbar can help accentuate the TV sound output and deliver a better overall user interface.

Smart TV Buying Guide

Screen Size – Depends on a range of factors

Several factors determine the screen size of your smart LED TV. These TVs are available in an extensive range of sizes starting from 20-inches onwards. Factors that can influence your decision are as follows.

  • The size of the room
  • Your budget
  • The number of people watching the TV

Sitting at close distances from the TV is not advisable. The minimum distance should be three times the TV screen size for HD TV and 1.5 times the size for a 4K or UHD TV.

Thus, if you have an HD TV with a screen size of 40 inches, you should sit at a minimum distance of 120 inches or ten feet from the TV.

On the other hand, if you go for a 4K TV, you can sit at a distance of five feet. Depending on the volume of space available in your room and the number of people watching the TV, you can decide accordingly.

Secondly, the 4K TVs are expensive compared to FHD TVs. Therefore, your budget also plays a critical role in deciding the TV you want to buy. You have TVs like Mi, Kodak, and others that offer 4K UHD resolution on large TVs at reasonable and affordable rates.

Screen resolution – HD vs FHD vs 4K)

Smart LED TVs are available at HD, Full HD, and 4K resolutions. So let us compare these screen resolutions to determine the ideal one for your home.

Original Image with HD vs Full HD vs 4K vs 8K Resolution

The difference between HD, FHD, and UHD is in the number of pixels per inch on the TV screen.

  • HD refers to 1280 x 720p = approximately 1 million pixels
  • FHD is twice as better as it contains 1920 x 1080p = approximately 2 million pixels
  • UHD or 4K is four times as powerful as FHD, with 3840 x 2160p = more than 8 million pixels

The more the number of pixels on the screen, the better is the image quality. It enables the TV to display larger size images without any picture degradation.

While 4K TVs are available in screen sizes 43-inches or more, the ideal size should be around 55 inches. In addition, an FHD TV is preferable to a standard HD TV because of its capacity to display better image quality.

The question is whether you should invest in a 4K TV or an FHD TV because not much 4K content is available in India. Sony and other top brand models have a 4K Up-scaler feature that upscales lower resolution content to as close as possible to 4K. However, it cannot match the original 4K content in any way. However, the situation is improving with more channels beaming 4K content in India.

So, you can invest in a 4K or UHD TV if your budget permits it.

Related: HD vs Full HD vs 4k vs 8k

Are 4K channels available in India?

Yes, the following 4K channels are available in India.

  • D2h Life 4K
  • Star Gold 4K
  • Star Sports 4K
  • Sony Six 4K
  • Nat Geo 4K

Besides, you have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video streaming 4K content in India. However, you should subscribe to the appropriate plan and update the necessary firmware on your TV to watch such 4K content.

Regarding FHD channels, 97 such channels are available in India. They include Star HD, Zee HD, Sony HD, Sun HD, and many more.

Since we are discussing smart LED TVs, we shall concentrate on LED TVs alone. First, however, one should know the elementary differences between LED, OLED, and QLED, the standard TV display technologies available today.

OLED – Organic LED – Expensive, but excellent

OLED is the best display technology among the three because each pixel can emit its own light in response to electric current. It also allows the complete shutting off the pixel completely. Thus, OLED can produce deep blacks, realistic colors, and high contrast levels.

LG Oled TV

Another advantage of OLED is that it does not require backlighting. Hence, you can have slimmer TVs.

One of the primary drawbacks of OLED is that the TVs cannot get as bright as QLED TVs but the better overall OLED quality compensates. Besides, OLED TVs offer better viewing angles.

LG manufactures OLED TV panels, but you also have Sony and Panasonic TVs featuring OLED panels.

LED – Light Emitting Diode – The most affordable solution

LED is not a display technology but a backlighting arrangement. The display screen consists of an LCD with LED backlighting. LED backlighting is considerably better than the CCFL-backlit panels. However, the blacks are never genuinely black in an LED TV.

Amongst the different technologies available, IPS (In-Plane Switching) offers a better viewing angle, whereas VA (Vertical Alignment) panels offer better contrast levels. The best aspect of LED is that it provides the most affordable solution. Resultantly, you have the maximum number of LED TVs on the market today.

Related: Types of TV Screens, Panels

QLED – Quantum Dot LED – The mid-range

QLED TV is an LED TV but with a difference. These TV screens come with a quantum dot filter between the LED backlights and the LCD screen to help produce high-quality colors.

SSamsung QLED TV

QLED TVs offer excellent brightness levels but are not as effective at producing deep blacks as OLED TVs.

QLED is a Samsung proprietary technology but is now found in other TVs like OnePlus, Vu, and TCL. However, Samsung produces panels.

If you love to watch movies shot in the dark like the Harry Potter Series or the Dark Knight Series, OLED TVs can enhance your viewing experience to the next level. Of course, things should not be any different for soap operas like Friends and others shot in brightly lit studios, but OLEDs can give you a good experience. The QLED TVs are better in this regard as they can deliver high-quality bright content.

QLED is a possible alternative to OLED, and these TVs are almost equal in cost to the OLED TVs of similar screen size. A lot depends on the source of the TV video and your budgetary preferences.

LED TVs from Sony, LG, and Samsung are of good quality. However, Samsung QLED TVs are comparatively expensive to LED TVs. LG OLED TVs are the most expensive of the lot.

OLED TVs are available in sizes 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, and 88 inches. LG has confirmed that it will be manufacturing a next-gen 77-inches panel with 20% higher efficiency than the existing panels. These panels can display higher brightness levels, similar to that of QLED.

On the other hand, Samsung QLED TVs are available in sizes ranging from 32 inches to 82 inches. Thus, Costs-wise, they are at par or slightly less than the OLED TVs.

LED TVs are available in every size up to 85 inches and even more.

Of the three, OLED is the most expensive. However, these TVs are worth the money you spend on them because of the accurate color reproduction, better viewing angles, deeper blacks, and thinner panels. Compared to QLED and LED TVs, the OLED TVs are the best.

Related: Oled vs Qled TV

HDR compatibility – Different types of HDR

In simple terms, HDR denotes High Dynamic Range. TVs with HDR compatibility display deeper colors and a wider color gamut and high brightness levels and display better performance.

HDR comes in three primary formats, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. A couple of other formats like HLG and Advanced HDR by Technicolor are also available.

When purchasing an LED TV, you need not worry much about which HDR format the TV supports because each of these formats delivers great experiences with the proper equipment. These formats have their points of distinction.

Related: HDR 10 vs HDR 10+ vs Dolby Vision

You can go through our detailed post on the difference between these formats. However, we can say that HDR10 is an open standard for HDR. In contrast, HDR10+ is a Royalty-free HDR standard, and Dolby Vision is a proprietary HDR standard made by Dolby.

While HDR10 deals with static metadata, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision deal with dynamic metadata. HLG is used by TV broadcasters and combines SDR and HDR, whereas Advanced HDR by Technicolor is an advanced HDR standard developed by LG and Technicolor.

Refresh Rates – 60Hz is the standard.

Refresh rates help in reducing motion blur and softening of the image when the object is in motion. Generally, LED TVs come with 60Hz refresh rates, sufficient for decent viewing performance.

If you use your TV for playing games or watching fast, action-packed scenes, you might require a higher refresh rate, say 120Hz or 144Hz. However, 60Hz is the standard and is sufficient.

Connectivity Ports – Look for HDMI ports

Connectivity ports help you to connect external devices to your TV. You could have a set-top box, gaming consoles like PS4, PS5 or Xbox, Soundbars, home theater systems, laptops, and other devices to connect to your TV.

4K TV HDMI ports

Hence, it is better to go for TVs that have more connectivity ports. TV manufacturers cut costs by offering fewer ports. Nevertheless, two to three HDMI ports are essential. In addition, a couple of USB ports and an optical port are offered as standard attachments on an LED TV.

When looking for HDMI ports, you should see that the TV offers HDMI 2.1 that supports 4K and 8K @ 120Hz refresh rates. However, HDMI 2.0 and 2.0b should also prove sufficient as they support 4K @ 60Hz.

Operating System – Critical for a smart TV

Finally, we come to the most critical part of our discussion, Smart TV OS. Today, every TV available on the market is a smart TV.

Smart tv streaming apps

Even the non-smart TVs that do not have built-in Wi-Fi connectivity can be converted to smart TVs. One can use external hardware like Amazon FireTV Stick or set-top boxes provided by internet service providers like Airtel, Reliance Jio, ACT Fibernet, etc.

You have a range of smart TV OS available on the market, depending on the TV manufacturer. Android is amongst the most popular OS and is found in many smart TVs. For example, LG offers WebOS, whereas Samsung TVs offer Tizen OS. Besides, there are other operating systems, like Roku, Fire TV OS, etc.

Roku TV OS is widely popular in the US and Canada. However, not many people in India use Roku TV OS, despite many TVs supporting it. These TV models include TCL, Philips, Hitachi, Hisense, Sharp, etc.

WebOS is LG’s smart TV OS. This OS is different from Android as it features the launch bar at the bottom of the screen. One of the positive aspects of WebOS is that it is compatible with Bluetooth and Miracast. Another noteworthy feature of WebOS is that it includes live apps, where you can pause the content in one app and start using another app. This feature allows you to return to the first app and start watching from where you left off. WebOS offers crisp and clean images.

Android TV OS is the most common smart TV OS in India. It has features like a built-in Chromecast that makes streaming content from an Android phone easy. It also enables easy casting from compatible devices. In addition, Google Assistant allows you to use your voice to control its operations.

Tizen OS is a Linus-based OS found only on Samsung smart TVs. It has a similar design to WebOS, but it has its minus points. It is not the most intelligent OS available today. Though it is a straightforward OS to use, it is inconsistent.

Samsung TV Tizen OS
Samsung Smart TV with Tizen OS

Fire TV Edition is a smart TV OS version of the Amazon Fire TV devices. It is compatible with Amazon Alexa. However, it has its limitations because it cannot access Google Play Store for its apps.

While Android TV and WebOS are two of the best-operating systems in India, you can pick up Android because of its smart assistant capabilities. WebOS is a slick and minimalistic OS, whereas Roku TV offers the largest app selection of all.

Amazon Fire TV does not offer the range of apps required, and Tizen OS appears the weakest of the five operating systems discussed here.

So, choosing the ideal smart LED TV for your home should not be an issue. This buying guide and the individual reviews should help you in this regard.

  6. Hi Chaitanya, very helpful article.
looking to buy a tv between 50k to 60k, full hd smart tv between 47 to 50 inches. Would prefer amongst the top 4 brands u have mentioned. (how ahead are these 4 brands as compared to others?)
    pls suggest.

2 more qstns that could help us all:
    – should we take extended warranty, is it worth the price and how often does it come in use ?
    – is it recommended to buy online or on retails stores?

    • Most of the electronics and Appliances include a manufacturer’s warranty that typically lasts 12 months. Defects occurring out of faulty Appliance or software are covered under the warranty.

Physical damage such as cracks, scratches, damages caused due to improper usage is not covered by warranty.
Extended warranty also works in a similar way. It only covers malfunctions and breakdowns but not physical or cosmetic damage. It is up to you if you opt for an extended warranty or not.
Technically, there is no much difference whether you buy the product online or at a retail store. You will get same warranty and same brand support. Additionally, you get good discounts, EMI offers, exchange offers when you buy at online stores like Amazon and Flipkart. Make sure you buy the product only from trusted sites like Flipkart, Amazon or Brand Authorized online store.

Curved TVs enhance immersion by curving the image slightly forward. If you are watching a curved TV for the first time, the images look like 3D even when the original source is 2D. They offer better Contrast. On the top of all these things, the curved TVs just look cool.

          Here are the demerits.

Limited viewing angles. If you really want to enjoy a curved TV, you need to sit right opposite to the middle of the screen. Also, the Screen size needs to be big to get most benefits. The curved TVs look awkward when you hang them on the wall. The Normal Flat Screen LED TVs look great when they are mounted on the wall.

Sony KLV-48W562D is the Old Model. KLV-49W672E is the Latest 2017 version.

For Football, Cricket and Action Movies, Games watching, go with Sony KLV 49W672E model. The X-Reality Pro Picture Engine is great, the refresh rate is 200 Hz which offers blur-free picture when watching Action games. Also, the X-Protection Pro feature protects the TV from lightning, short circuits, and unstable power supply.

    • Watch in online about specifications etc in online and then go to buying in retail stores is better in my opininon. Retail stores you can view practically and compare models. But dont be in a hurry to buy immediately or dont rely on sales man words completely and dont confuse with their words. Take a correct decision before purchasing go to different stores dont rely on single store. In my opinion purchasing in retail store is better. Please purchase mostly newly launched models. It will be good. The reason is if the product is defect or not working you can change immediately. While in online purchase if found defective you can replace it within 10 days and money refunded but some online shopping they are not replacing or delay in replacing and money is not refunding.

  9. Hi Chaitnya,

I’m looking to buy a 40″inch LED Tv. My chief concern is that I live very close to the Malad Creek, which is known to affect the life of all sorts of electronic devices. This is what I have been told by the engineers who have visited my house to fix my existing 32 inch Samsung. In the last 6 years, I have replaced my PCB once and fixed the speakers once. Is there any brand that corrosion-proofs its hardware parts? We are currently considering LG 43LJ554T and Samsung 43 FHD LED 43M5100

    • As Price is not a factor, you can have a look at Samsung’s QLED, LG’s OLED models.

      Sony Bravia KD-49X7002E

Priced a little bit higher than 80K. But, the 4K X-Reality Pro offers unmatched picture clarity.

      Samsung 49K6300

Also, have a look at PANASONIC TH-49ES630D. If you are looking for a LG TV, please have a look at this post.

    • If you are looking for a Led TV Priced below 80K, check out the below models. The below models offer Great Picture Quality than the BPL 55 inch model.

      Sony Bravia KLV-48W562D

Sony BRAVIA X7002E (4K Resolution) Priced slightly above 80K. But, totally worth the price.

    • LG 49 UJ632T sports an IPS 4K Display Panel and LG’s HDR effect use unique image processing for an HDR like Viewing experience. The 4K Upscaling, Image Processing is also great. The Refresh rate is 50Hz which is good for watching normal TV content and movies. There are three HDMI ports and 2 USB ports.

Samsung Series 6 50 inch MU6100 TV also sports an Ultra HD 4K resolution and the Refresh rate is 100 Hz which is great for watching Action Movies and Adventure Sports. There are 3 HDMI ports and 2 USB ports. Samsung Smart View App is good and you can control the Smart TV with your mobile. You can also watch your mobile’s content on the TV screen. The Picture Quality is Great in both the televisions.

If you are a fan of Action Movie or Adventure Sports, the Samsung TV will be better as the refresh rate is on the higher side.

      • Your article mentions that refresh rates above 60Hz are a gimmick in India and you are recommending a 100Hz Samsung. A bit confused. Can you clarify this please?

    • Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Sony are the Premium Television brands and they compete in terms of technology and these brands have better picture engines. The TV’s with HDR Technology have better contrasts and better colors.

The Picture Quality and Sound depends on the Technology that is employed in the Television. It differs from one model to the other. Please mention the model number so I can advise you accordingly.
