Having spoken about smart TVs and the popular apps that meet most of your basic needs, let’s get into some technicalities to make sure you make the best pick.

Mirroring and casting

Let us first understand the difference between mirroring and casting, as they both have a very fine line that separates the two concepts.

In case of mirroring, the display on the source device is literally replayed on the smart TV. On the other hand, casting is when what is on the source device is not exactly displayed on the smart TV.

Meaning, the source device can again function as it is while the content that’s being cast keeps streaming on the smart TV. Hence we can say that casting has an edge over screen mirroring.

In lay man’s language, screen mirroring means exactly copying what is happening on the mobile device on the TV screen. Screen mirroring needs the source device to be connected to a common network in order to display the same content on the display screen, which in our case is a TV.

Screen mirroring technology has undergone significant changes over a couple of years and one of the best methods to mirror your screen owing to various factors like how long ago the model was introduced, model and manufacturer of your source device and TV.

There are two screen mirroring dongle options that are currently available to the masses, namely- Chromecast and Miracast.

Chromecast

It is a dongle (just like a pendrive) that is to be plugged to the smart TV’s HDMI port which is to be connected to the Internet via a WiFi network.

It is to be known that Chromcast needs an app in order to be used. Once chromecast is being used, the user can stream the videos of his choice from the source device to the television.

Brands that support chromecast on their smart TV are:-

1. Sony
2. Toshiba
3. Google

Pros

  • The app usage increases the compatibility The user can multitask
  • Most of the well known multimedia apps can be used

Cons

  • It is dependent on the internet
  • The display being mirrored on the TV can look discoloured.

Mircast

it’s again a dongle device like Chromecast that makes a replica of the content on the portable device to another device and then to the smart TV. It establishes a device to device connection instead of connecting via internet, which ensures that it functions without having to depend on the internet connection. Brands that support Miracast on their smart TV are:-

1. Sony
2. LG
3. Samsung
4. Toshiba
5. Panasonic

Pros

  • Does not depend on the internet.
  • Apt for professional use
  • Does not use any cable, thereby cutting down on the clutter

Cons

  • The user can not multitask

The size of the television

One might think that having a bigger screen equals to having better view. But there are certain things to be kept in mind when deciding the size of the screen, some of the basic points being the size of the room, the distance between the viewer and the smart TV, the number of viewers watching the TV simultaneously.

Other than these little factors, the resolution of the TV is also to be considered. High resolution can let the viewer sit at a closer proximity without pixilation being spotted and therefore, a smaller screen can be opted for while a lower resolution will require the TV to be set at a farther distance requiring a larger screen.

Here is a standardized chart that may assist you to pick your choice of size

Distance Ideal screen size
5-6 feet32 inches
6-9 feet40-45 inches
9-10 feet 50 inches
10-12 feet 60-65 inches

Display type

A smart TV considering all the other features it comes with is actually purchased to watch a content of the viewer’s choice. This makes the display type of the smart TV one of the most crutial points to consider when purchasing it. The display type is directly related to the picture quality the TV will be able to produce. It includes the health of colours and all the little details in the picture. The major display types are:

Plasma

Plasma screens are made by sticking two sheets of glasses and between these sheets certain gasses are injected and then sealed. These gasses trapped inside the galsses react with electricity and lightens up the screen.

Compared to LCD and LED, Plasma has an upper as its colour accuracy as impeccable and sharpness of the image is unmatched. It is said to be able to display 16.77 million colours.

Pros

  • Has a high resolution
  • There is no image distortion and glaze
  • Greater viewing angles

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Little mishandling can cause damage

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

LCD has a flat panel having multiple blocks where each block is filled with liquid crystals and they can block or allow the light to pass and this feature is used to illuminate and dim the view of the screen. However it must be noted that LCD cannot produce light of its own and needs external light source for illumination.

Pros

  • Very little geometric deformation
  • Thin in size hence more convenient
  • Has above average display quality

  • Limited viewing angles

LED

LEDs can be described as a more advanced and updated version of LCDs. The advancement made here is that instead of using an external source like a light bulb to illuminate as it is needed in LCD, LEDs use light emitting diodes to illuminate itself.

One thing to be noted that there are two different types of LEDs:

Direct LEDs– these are the LEDs that we have spoke about above. They enable to control specific areas of the screen to brighten or darken as required.

Edge-lit LEDs– as the name suggests, here the LED lights are set along the borser of the screen. These LEDs on the outside reflect light onto the centre of the screen to illuminate it. Since there are no LEDs at the centre, edge-lit LEDs are thinner in size.

Pros

  • Very efficient
  • Does not heat up easily
  • slender in shape

Cons

  • Sensitive to change in temperature especially heat
  • Slightly on the expensive side

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)

LG oled tv 8k 88 inch

This is the latest advancement in the screen display sector. Unlike LED’s and LCD’s OLED does not have a requirement of a backlight to light up the screen area.

OLED is known for producing infinite contrast ratio, true blacks and deep colour. It uses organic equipment to create light. OLED also gives much better picture quality by offering robust colours, real life like contrasts and a much faster image processing.

Pros

  • Very good picture quality
  • Little or no noise distortion
  • Slim shape

Cons

  • Priced on the higher end.

Connectivity

All the smart TVs need to be connected to the internet to be able to use it complete potential. Many smart TVs have Ethernet on the rear end to connect it to the internet router while some have built in connectivity.

Every smart TV needs to have the basic connectivity available for it to function with other devices that are standard and universal to almost all the gadgets.

Some of the basic connectivity options for input developed are:

Here the sound system identifies the source of the sound and the movement of it, understands the same and plays it in a 3-D space. This kind of management of the sound makes the user feel as if he is amidst the subject in vision and within the four walls.

Digital Theatre System

(DTS) is one of the most popular names in the world of surround sound systems. In the past, DTS was mostly used professionally in the theatres but in the recent times it is being used in television sets and home theatres.

DTS has exponentially improved the quality of the sound track as it has a way that works as a filter which assists the Field Application Engineers to tune TVs and sound bars.

Which 55 inch TV to buy.for Senior citizen Parents who needs loud sound and kids, for whom the impact on eyes is least? And for me the TV is durable with long life and maintenance free..

Are smart TV really worth the additional money spent, or shall I go for simple LED TV and buy Amazon Fire TV Stick .

Looking forward to your experience advice.

If you are looking for a big budget tv, then go for brands like sony. But if you are looking for a budget smart tv, then i would prefer Ridaex Nuke series tv. I have been using it for the past 2 months and it is just awesome.

Also it comes along with a magic remote.

The OLED from LG and QLED are both impressive but very different technologies. The reviews of OLED are good and picture clarity of LG is better but Samsung QLED scores more points in terms of brightness and OS speed and customization. Which one should i go for considering a 55 inch size. Will it be cheaper to buy from dubai during the shopping festival???

6

Go for Sony Bravia if you want best picture quality, which is the main point to be considered while buying a TV. Qunatom Dots were implemented in Sony Bravia TVs from long back (2013 or before) where as Samsung use the same as QLED now.
