The water passes through a UV chamber that serves its purpose by killing the germs and providing healthy water to drink.

Such water purification systems need electricity to work. Secondly, there is a disadvantage because the UV chamber can kill the germs but not destroy the bodies of the viruses and bacteria.

Reverse Osmosis – RO water purifier

To understand Reverse Osmosis, one should be conversant with the principles of osmosis.

This requires us to go back to our school days and reopen the biology books. Osmosis is a natural process where a liquid in an area with a lower concentration tends to move towards an area of higher concentration through a semipermeable membrane.

A simple example of osmosis is when you place a potato inside a glass of water. After some time you will find the vegetable swelling up because the water from the glass seeps through inside the potato.

The potato contains a high concentration of starch. The potato skin acts as a semipermeable membrane. The significance of the semipermeable membrane is that it does not allow the reverse flow of water under normal circumstances.

Reverse osmosis is reversing the process of osmosis. In this process, water moves from an area of higher concentration to that of a lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane.

RO water purifiers work on a similar procedure where the impure water with a higher TDS level passes through a semipermeable RO membrane.

The membrane has millions of small pores through which the salts cannot pass through. The water molecules are small enough to seep through thereby ensuring the elimination of TDS.

However, this process requires the application of pressure. Hence, RO water purifiers come with built-in pumps to quicken the process.

We shall now discuss the working principle of an RO water purifier.

RO Water Purifier – Working principle

The RO water purifiers available in the market employ a six-level or seven-level water filtration process.

Sediment Filter

The sediment filter is the first line of defence in an RO water purifier. Usually, the sediment filter is placed outside the RO water purifier machine.

The sediment filter works in a way similar to that of the erstwhile candle filters we had in the late 1980s. The water from the source passes through this sediment filter that takes care of the large impurities.

Hence the water loses much of its turbidity before entering the RO water purifier. It serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, it eliminates the heavy impurities and reduces the load for the RO water purification process. As a result, it enhances the life of the RO membrane.

Pre-Activated Carbon Filter

 The RO water purifier system has the water passing through an activated carbon filter to remove the organic impurities. This filter also helps by removing the unpleasant taste of water.

Ultra-Filtration Stage

The UF is the third stage of filtration. The water now passed through the UF membrane to trap soluble contaminants.

The UF membrane consists of tiny pores that can trap microscopic pollutants. Thus, the water becomes relatively free of soluble solids after passing through the UF stage.

Reverse Osmosis Stage

The RO purification is the crucial stage in the purification process. The UF-purified water passes through the RO membrane, thereby resulting in the elimination of all TDS.

This purification process removes the toxic molecules of lead, arsenic, mercury, and other contaminants. It also ensures to remove TDS by more than 99%. Thus, you have TDS-free water emerging from the outlet.

The RO process has a disadvantage in that it wastes a lot of water while squeezing out pure water from the water source. This water flows out of the machine through a separate outlet.

Ultraviolet Purification

The RO process takes care of TDS and other metallic impurities. It also destroys some of the larger microorganisms, as well.

However, organisms having size less than the pores of the RO membrane pass through the filtration process. This RO-purified water then passes through an ultraviolet chamber that destroys the viruses and bacteria from the water.

Hence, you have pure and healthy water at the end of the fifth stage of purification.

Post-activated carbon filter

The UV process eliminates viruses and bacteria by killing them. However, it cannot dispose of the dead bodies of these viruses. Secondly, some organic impurities manage to sneak through the process.

Hence, the water passes through a Post-activated filter to remove these dead bodies and improve the taste of water by getting rid of the organic pollutants. The primary function of this filter is to destroy the bad odour from the RO purified water.

TDS Controller – Mineraliser

As explained earlier, the RO purified water has low levels of TDS. In the process, the water loses essential salts like calcium, potassium, and magnesium, among others.

The TDS controller replenishes these salts and balances the pH level of water. We have discussed that pure water is tasteless and odourless. Hence, the TDS controller serves to balance the pH levels and make the water tasty and healthy to drink.

The mineraliser performs a similar function as the TDS controller. It supplements the mineral content lost during the RO purification. The mineraliser is a better option than the TDS controller, as it replenishes the specific minerals.

    • RO water purifier with UV UF combination is required to remove excess TDS from the water. IF the TDS is above 400ppm, you have to install an RO water purifier otherwise UV UF water purifier is enough to remove the bacteria and other contaminants from the water.

  9. I am from Hyderabad and bought the top of the line UV cum water purifier on 20th March and was promised that it will be installed the very next day. The idea behind it was we all in india were expecting the lock down and as I have a 85 year old fragile mother, I didnt want to buy water from outside vendors.
    Post the purchase, Shiva and Venkat would avoid my wife’s and my calls and we somehow got in touch with them and on their request we got a plumber who installed it online over video call with Venkat. It was not installed well and he promised that he will find a solution next day. He then disappeared again and when I escalated it to Ram Prasad, he put me on to another person Ravikant who again put me on to yet another person Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna mentioned that we “should not” drink the water till we check the TDS levels and that he will come the next day to check. Even this promise was broken and when i escalated this to Ram Prasad and REQESTED him to help us as WE WERE HAVING A MAJOR WATER he was most casual and disrespectful. I strongly do not recommend anyone to associate with such people who dont know the definition of “Customer Satisfaction”. I am scrapping the product and am telling all my friend’s and acquaintances about the experience. God save the company who has such people in the system.

  19. I have very clean bore water with TDS 507. I am using it directly for cooking. I want to pass it through RO and VF for drinking. Instead of using the overhead tank as source, which gets easily contaminated with dust. cobwebs and moss, I will use a separate 10 litre tank as source into which I will pump the bore water periodically. Can this tank be kept below the filter instead of above?

    • 3M whole house filtration system foes not require any electricity and removes impurities like dirt, mud and other suspended impurities that are larger than 5 microns.

      Normal UF water purifiers (UltraFiltration) comes with a pore size of 0.1 microns and are capable of removing bacterium and cysts from the water which is not possible with 3M filtration.

      The TDS levels in your water source are below 300ppm and good. So, there is no need to for a Reverse Osmosis water purifier. You can simply install a UV/UF water purifier like Kent Maxx, Havells UV Plus or Aquaguard superb UV Uf water purifier.

    Im living in chennai. I use borewater which is yellow water (high iron content).
    Currently I do two levels of Filteration:

    Level 1: Iron remover plant (MORF India). Output Water TDS – 912. AMC-Rs.3000/yr
    Level 2: Water Purifier (Aquaguard – RO Only). Output Water TDS – 115. AMC-Rs.4500/yr

    I Prefer to change Level 2 Water Purifier. Reason – Current Purifier is 12 years Old. But still runs good.

    • What is the level of the TDS in your water source? If it is more than 2000ppm, domestic water purifiers are of no use.

      Anything less than 2000ppm, you can use an RO water purifier. To remove iron impurities from the water, you definitely need to install an RO water purifier. Reverse Osmosis is capable of removing Salts and Hard metals from the water.

      To find the TDS levels in the water, you can use a TDS meter or you can take the water sample to the nearest lab.

      Also, most of the Reverse Osmosis water purifier comes with UV/UF combination to ensure the water is 100% free from contaminants.

      Some of the RO models come with TDS Controllers and some models have Mineralizer.

      In your case, it is better to opt for a 100% RO water purifier with Mineralizer where 100% water flows through the Reverse Osmosis chamber.

UV/UF are used for extra safety. Livpure Glo lite comes with RO UF combination. If Livpure provides good service at your place, you can go with that model.

    • Performance and purification wise, there is no difference. But, the Kent Grand Star comes with a -built UV disinfection in the storage tank so you can store the water for a long time in the 9-litre storage tank. Also, there is a Digital display which allows you to monitor the status of the tank, filter life and water quality.

      But, the output water quality for both the water purifiers is same.

    Please suggest the best water purifier for me,

    We are getting water from multiple sources sometime municipal, tank and borewell and TDS like 200-250, 400-500 and 800-900 respectively.

    I am confused between two technologies one use by Kent (RO VU UF TDS) and other use by aquaguard (RO UV MTDS) with mineral guard and active cooper etc.

    I have short listed few model, Kent Grand * , Kent Grand Plus, Kent Prime, Aquaguard Reviva Nxt( RO UV MTDS) andDr. Aquaguard Magna Nxt HD(RO UV MTDS).

    At present, I am using Aquagaud RO Reviva from last 12 years.

  27. Which do purifier wastes the least water? People say it’s Kent supreme but generally the reviews are not good for Kent supreme.

  28. Hi .. very useful blog. I live in Bangalore, where we get multiple source water (mixed). I am not convinced with Kent or other major brands who advertise much but service delivery is poor.

    What is your opinion about BRITA water purifiers? They are slightly expensive, and are not into major advertising yet, but their product specs look impressive – RO UF UV filtration, Alkatron technology to infuse lost minerals, stainless steel storage container, good service promise (call back in 1 hour, issue resolution in 1 day) etc. Also in their AMC they promise even the RO filter replacement.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.

    • The Purification process is almost same in Brita or any other major RO water purifier brand. These water purifier brands use different | Attractive technology names for the simple purification process. At the end of the day, RO purification process is all the same. Some brand use TDS Controllers and some use Mineralizers for retaining the natural minerals that are lost during the RO purification process.

  29. I have recently installed Eureka Forbes RO AQUA GUARD REVIVA ACTIVE COPPER TECHNOLOGY RO 8 LTS. IT IS GIVING 50 TDS OF WATER. IS THIS WATER OF LOW TDS FIT FOR DRINKING?
    HOW CAN WE CHECK THE MINERALS LEVEL LIKE CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM OF MY RO WATER?
